El Grito

Summary

Until recently banned, Aretche's documentary was filmed in secret and captures the clashes that broke out in Mexico in 1968, shortly before the Olympics, between students protesting against the corrupt government, army and police. For this outstanding work the students of film take credit. It stands out as a rare visual document of all the events leading up to the massacre of students in Tlatelolac: 1300 people were detained and 400 killed.

It is an abrasive, declarative film - you feel the anger and anxiety with which and in which it is made, and it transposes the viewer to a specific moment and place. It is composed of lengthy sequences of political speeches and narration written by Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci. Over the course of two hours, the film is chronologically built towards a brutal crescendo, composed of grainy footage, photographs and exhaustive audio from the field, composed to evoke the horror of the massacre and ensure that the event is not forgotten. The documentary El Grito is often placed at the top of the list of major Mexican films, with influential Mexican film critic Jorge Ayala Blanco calling it "the most complete and coherent testimony of the Movement, documented from the inside and countered by defamation placed through the mass media."
