Summary
Between September 1919. and Christmas 1920., a poet Gabriele D'Annunzio was a conqueror and later Commander of the the City of Rijeka/Fiume. La materia non conta (material is irrelevant) - was his motto, with which he emphasized the superiority of his vision and his ideals over petty material, physical and earthly problems. However, unlike his poetic works up until then, this 'poetic' feat had very tangible, material and tragic consequences on the human lives and urban fabric of Rijeka at that time. The voices of young people from the past - an enthusiastic Italian legionnaire and a frightened Croatian girl - continue to resonate in the city today.
