Program
The modes of portraying female sexuality on film since the appearance of this medium have been trapped between two extremes that are effectively summed up by the famous folk catchfrase either saint or whore. Between the objectification of the female body and the pathologisation of female craving, there is not too much room for positive display of female sexual desire and autoeroticism. Various feminisms have also dealt with this subject in various ways, and we will be particularly interested in those who approached it affirmatively. Norwegian coming of age film Turn Me On, Goddammit! directed by Jannicke Systad Jacobsen, based on the hit novel of the same name by Olaug Nilssen, is an exception in this either one thing or another narrative that will help us explore the perspectives of other and different representations of the female body on film - the female body that matures sexually, the female body that masturbates, the female body which is not ashamed, even when they're trying to embarrass it, the fmeale body that is primarily actively craving and only then is the object of other's cravings.
After watching the film, instead of a lecture, we will engage in a joint discussion so that each viewer will receive one short text on one of the topics concerning youthful female sexuality and female identities on and around the film. We will then try to relate the read texts with what we have seen, and in this way we will assemble a picture of the female desire that goes beyond that reductive either saint or whore opposition. In doing so, we will pay special attention to finding connections between the domestic and Norwegian teen experiences of the sexuality world.
